In major news coming from Avalon Raceway this week, Essendon Ford dealer principle David Dickson announced that the 31st President’s Cup for Sprintcars will carry additional prizemoney including the winner receiving a healthy $10,000 for the victory. Set for decision on January 18, the President’s Cup has traditionally attracted a quality field while the additional prizemoney is sure to attract even more interest from both interstate and international drivers.

Victorian Stephen Bell won the 2011 edition of the President’s Cup when he defeated a strong field including American star and World of Outlaw champion Jason Meyers along with Outlaw regular Joey Saldana and three time champion and current Australian titleholder Brooke Tatnell. Driving for Victory Lane Racegear proprietor Mat Eastham, Bell’s victory in the President’s Cup was the cherry on a magnificent season at the Geelong venue that also saw the team victorious in the Essendon Ford Sprintcar track championship.

“The extra prizemoney is terrific news for all car owners and drivers but I think the big winner will be the paying public who will get to see an ever bigger car count and high profile Australian and American drivers this year,” said an understandably excited Eastham.

Five US drivers have won the President’s Cup with the most recent being Tennessee Outlaw star Paul McMahan in 2005. Victorian Sprintcar icon Max Dumesny has won the event four times while Tatnell has won on three occasions. Bell’s victory last January rates highly for owner Eastham considering the history of the President’s Cup and the names already engraved on the winners trophy.

“We all know it’s not about the money as this big cup sitting in my office is one of my proudest possessions with who we beat there last season,” enthused Eastham.

With first prize being $10,000, the remaining finishers haven’t been forgotten with a further increase to the payout for those finishing runner up and back. The President’s Cup is now one of three Sprintcar events at Avalon Raceway that pays the same figure including the season opening Jackpot Invitational along with World Series Sprintcars Speedweek round in December.

Avalon Raceway is back in action this Saturday night, November 26th with Formula 500’s, AMCA Nationals and GP Midgets on the program. Gates open at 4pm with racing to begin at 7pm.
