Over 40 Sprintcars are set to appear tonight at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway where the winner of the feature will walk away with $5,000 and be crowned the 2012 Victorian Sprintcar Champion. Tonight’s event also carries Essendon Ford Sprintcar track championship points and with James McFadden leading and hot off victory last night at Simpson Speedway in night 1 of the Great Southern Showdown, the 22 year old has plenty on the line tonight. McFadden enjoyed a popular win ahead of Matthew Reed and Jamie Veal when, along with John Vogels, the quartet were involved in a brilliant contest at the tight Simpson venue. Veal peppered away at the tail of leader McFadden only to slip to fourth in half a lap when Reed and Vogels motored past. Clawing his way back to third was still a solid finish for Veal despite looking good for the win mid race. Robbie Farr led the opening laps before being left with nowhere to go and stalling the Q7 when Dennis Jones had a right front wheel centre break with Eddie Lumbar also stalling, both in front of the tear away leader Farr. Courtesy of a second push, the luckless Farr was sent to the tail of the field at the restart. Veal secured yet more Eureka Sprintcar Series points to maintain his slender lead over fifth finishing Darren Mollenoyux. Tonight also carries more Eureka Sprintcar Series points as it is also the penultimate round with the championship concluding at Warrnambool later this month. Public gates will open at 3pm this Saturday night at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway with engine starts and hot laps at 6pm.
