Johnny Vogels will have strong support from race fans when he breezes in to Avalon Raceway this Saturday night and dares to win the Routleys sprintcar Stampede which opens the Essendon Ford $20.000 Sweepstakes.
The Simpson engineer and accomplished dirt track racer, led home the feature race field at Heartland Raceway, Moama on Saturday night after a thrilling duel with Darren Mollenoyux.
The two drivers went at it from the opening bell but it all came to an end when Darren cut down a tyre close to the finish and Vogels then had to fend off Domain Ramsey and comeback star Matt Reid in his own car.
“Mollenoyux and I had a good thing going until his tyre issue, but he’ll keep us all on our toes at Avalon next weekend,” quipped Vogels.
The win shoots him to the top of the Eureka Garages and Sheds point score series and he would like a little more congestion with the Routleys and Essendon Ford sponsored events on Saturday at Avalon.
Domain Ramsey, another outstanding competitor in both the speedcar and sprintcar divisions, would love to reward long time sponsor David Dickson with a win on the weekend in his Essendon Ford sponsored car.
The timely return of Matt Reid is a bonus for spectators.
He spent considerable time racing in the US over consecutive seasons, but that experience ate into his domestic budget and restricted his activity in 2011 and throughout this year.
There is no doubting magic Matt has lost none of his mojo and Avalon is a circuit where he has dominated in previous seasons.
“The Moama car count topped 40 so we anticipate 50 sprintcars primed for action in the pits on Saturday,” promised Jeff Drew.
The qualifying time trials will set the scene during the showdown at sundown
with heat races and a no holds barred 30 lap premiership bare nuckle fight to complete the hostilities.
