Avalon Raceway’s 2013-14 season will launch into action this Saturday night with a variety of five action-packed classes of racing.
Speedcars, Street Stocks, Modified Production, Wingless Sprints and Juniors will all help kick start a bumper night of wheel to wheel racing at the Avalon complex in what looms as one of the biggest years in the club’s history.
This race meeting will be one of 16 locked in for Avalon Raceway and the popular sprintcars are set to feature during 10 of those race nights and they will run at the venue on October 26 in the sought-after Sprintcar Jackpot and will also compete for the2013-14 Essendon Ford Track Championship.
Avalon’s Jeff Drew said a lot of planning has gone into the schedule and encouraged not only speedway fans but sports fans to come and enjoy a night at the venue.
“We’re very excited about the prospect of a very good season. It’s looking like another big year for everyone at Avalon and some of the names we’re negotiating with currently should provide some of the best racing at the speedway for some time,” Drew said.
This weekend though will be headlined by the opening round of the six-round Lucas Oils Southern Speedcar Tour presented by Cycle House.
In its fourth season, the chase for overall line honours in the Tour will be more open as reigning and now a dual SST champion Travis Mills looks to compete more on the national scene. Mills’ dominance was very evident last season with a win at Avalon in the opener and then he added another five victories of the eight rounds contested.
The Speedcar scene looks very promising this season with strong numbers swelling the ranks nationally and has attracted some of the best drivers from all classes competing.
Two drivers in the field for this Saturday are regular sprintcar competitors, Domain Ramsay of Geelong and Thornbury’s Brett Smith who will have tough competition from former Australian Formula 500 champion, Brock Hallett and three-time Australian AMCA champ, Adam Wallis.
Others to watch in the Speedcar ranks during the night will be former V8 Dirt Modified champion Dave May and former Compact Speedcar racer Brad Day who are set to make their Speedcar debut. They will be against regulars Troy Jordan, Andy Pearce, Ben Dillon with former Speedcar star Paul Farrell making a welcome return to the class.
All classes should produce plenty of spirited racing and lots of thrills and spills at The Place of Pace and all will provide a spectacular start to the season opener which starts at 6.00pm.
