Geelong drivers are among the favourites to test the sprintcar guns in tonight’s 25 lap premiership round at Avalon Raceway.

Eleven of the 52 entrants have home credentials and include David Alford (Lara), Scott Drew (Corio), Marcus and Peter Green (Herne Hill), Andrew Hibbert (Lara), Clinton McLaren (Belmont), Layton Orchard (Clifton Springs), Mick Parry (Bell Park), Corey Pretlove (Highton), Robert Stevenson (Belmont) and Paul Drew (Norlane).

The wingless sprinters can now boast a roster of 92 regular racers making it the hottest speedway class in Australia.

Troy Small, Operations Manager of the category, said this week the popularity of the division came back to ‘affordable cost’.

“The specifications have been improved with special attention to safety and we’re on a roll,” promised Troy.

Tonight’s qualifying events should be particularly spectacular as 52 drivers will be whittled back to the best 18 for the main event.

Jessica Moulden (pictured) is the national Formula 500 champion and she steps up into one of the most competitive cars tonight and is likely to have plenty of attention eyes focussed on her track deeds.

The man to beat will again be Sam Wren who already has four wins to his credit this season and if his current form continues, he’ll be hard to toss.

A strong field of V8 dirt modified drivers will also face the green flag in tonight’s 25 lap main event that should be a good preview of the Australian championships at Avalon next month.

The meeting will precede the the Sprintcar Gold Cup, presented by Sharp Cranes, on Boxing Night.
