Queenslander David Clarke spent most of the weekend on the road pounding the pavement between Brisbane and Geelong.
The object of his fascination with the freeway was a three hour stopover at Avalon to compete in Saturday night’s V8 dirt modified events and to get to know the local circuit that he will defend his national title on in January.
Give the guy a perfect score for dedication.
David does not want to be considered a Queensland one night wonder who happened to luck into a national title in his home State.
He charged into the lead in the 25 lap trophy event on Saturday night and fought a race long battle with local ace Brett Clarke and Daniel Scott.
The lead swung back and forth between the Clarkes until Brent nailed the main and stole the hardware from the Aussie champ.
“I learnt a lot tonight on our car set up and with a little touch of luck we’ll turn a second into a win next time out here in the championship,” David told everyone.
In the meantime smooth Sam Wren was after his fifth main event win of the season in the wingless class.
His plans went out the door when he flipped in his heat race and then he pondered running the alphabet to keep his dream alive.
He came back to win the C main in the rebuilt sprinter before placing eighth in the B and failing to transfer to the feature.
James Wren had pole for the 25 lapper, but he was rounded early by Daniel Sporer who showed a nifty turn of speed from the second row.
Sporer kept Wren at bay while Luke Weel took third after a consistent drive.
Avalon Raceway’s next meeting will be the annual 410 sprintcar Gold Cup, presented by Sharp Cranes that carries points towards the Essendon Ford Fiesta premiership.
Joining the field on that night will be top Sydney driver Ian Loudoun who will step into the car previously raced by Domain Ramsey.
