Avalon Raceway played host to the Speedcar ‘Skip’s’ Race, the Wingless 50 lapper, Super Rods and Street Stocks on Saturday night. On a warn and sunny evening, over 100 vehicles are in the pits ready to take to the clay in an feast for speedway fans.
48 Wingless warriors are out first with four heats of open wheel action, 23 Speedcars are up next with engine starts and hot laps followed by the heats of 17 Super Rods and then 18 Street Stocks bang elbows for the end to the first rotation of the night. The second rotation is full throttle with lots of thrills and spills, the track is quick and wide.With the heats finished we head into 2 B mains for the Wingless with the top 6 from each progressing to the back of the A Main. The Super Rods start the main events with Andrew Howard taking a strong lead until a caution is called and Jason Kavanagh gets the jump and pulls away to the checkers. Andrew Howard in for 2nd with Ewan McKenzie for 3rd. The Speedcars roll out to honour the memory of ‘Skip’ and the feature is a classic display of midget speed and passing. When its done Travis Mills holds the trophy high with Michael Stewart and Domain Ramsey sharing the podium. Street stocks punch out a door busting main with Troy Polley getting the better of Chris Bohdal and Chris Suiter, Troy celebrates with a donut in front of the appreciative crowd. With time against us, the Wingless 50 lapper starts with pole going to Dayn Bentvelzen, Glen Watts in P2, Wayne Pogue in P3 and Luke Weel in P4. Luke leads Dayn in the VWS Super Series and the crowd is exception a showdown. A red light crash on the front straight holts proceedings and with the time curfew coming into play there is just one more chance to get the event away. Unfortunately another stoppage occurs and we are out of time.
