It is with regret we have said goodbye this week to William ‘Nugget’ Mathieson.
Nugget was one of our longest serving volunteers, starting in the late 70’s and continuing through the 2000’s until he could no longer attend. In the early years he looked after the sidecars at Avalon Raceway, cooked at their bbq’s and made many friends with his good nature and dry humor. The pit gate was where Nugget held court and he will be remembered for this role. His ability to ‘say it as it was’ meant there was plenty of hearty conversations had with riders, drivers and other officials. His enthusiasm for speedway was shown with the many hours he spent at the venue helping and building whatever was needed. A talented sportsperson in his own right, Nugget was a highly regarded footballer.
To mark his contribution to Avalon Raceway and to celebrate his time at the venue, the pit gate will now be called ‘Nuggets Gate’.
On behalf of all involved at Avalon Raceway, we express our deepest thoughts for Betty and all the family.
