VALE JOHN SIDNEY
In an industry where terms such as Legend, Super Star and Trailblazer are often used as throw away lines, all three, and so many more, can legitimately be applied when describing John Sidney.
At Avalon Raceway, we witnessed a Giant of our Sport, work his craft or weave his magic, whether it be in the formative days in Production Cars or at the wheel of Victoria’s first V8 powered Sprintcar.
Post racing again we witnessed sheer brilliance and an astute mind at work, as an engine builder of the highest elk, and a game changer within Chassis design for both Sprintcars and Speedcars.
A softly spoken gentlemen, with a willingness to offer advice, all whilst still getting his hands dirty to ensure no one missed a lap wherever possible. Set-up advice, engine advice and at times accurate, honest performance appraisal.
His legendary partnership with Max Dumesny is the stuff of legend, Speedway, NASCAR, Touring Car, you name it they not only did it, the conquered it against the best in the World.
In 2008 the Drew Family recognized and acknowledged John’s outstanding contribution to the sport of Speedway Racing, via the Doug and Dot Drew Service to Speedway Award.
In the ensuing 17 years, John was a constant at our Lara based venue, watching, advising and helping – always with the best interests of all involved at heart.
Later that year, John was afforded the honour of being an inductee into the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame. Most recently in March of this year he received the ultimate recognition, becoming an inductee into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame.
Now with his passing, John Sidney will be remembered as not only a Legend, a Super Star and a Trailblazer of our sport, but most importantly as a friend to so many.
To John’s Family and very, very large circle of friends and acquaintances, the Drew Families, Management and everyone at Avalon Raceway offers our condolences.
Rest In Peace John Sidney.
