The Great Southern Showdown lived up to its name at Avalon Raceway on Saturday night, with 26-year-old Jordyn Charge claiming his second Avalon victory of the season in impressive fashion on a night proudly presented by Daimler Trucks Geelong.

After an early restart, a long run of green flag laps and heavy lap traffic created the perfect opportunity for Charge to make his move. Once he found his opening, he made it count, racing his way into NAPA Geelong Victory Lane.

Tasmania’s Tate Frost started from pole position and looked strong throughout the feature, but a slight slip outside the groove opened the door for Charge to strike. Frost would go on to record an impressive second-place finish in the Doolans Heavy Haulage T62 machine.

Portland’s Luke Storer was also a standout, charging home for third and applying pressure on Frost for much of the 30-lap feature journey.

The Little Showdown added even more excitement to the double dose of Sprintcar action, with the 360/LS Sprintcars also putting on a thrilling display.

Chris Solomon, aboard the B&B Retaining Walls V11, was clinical when it mattered most. After stalking the lead battle, Solomon made his winning move with just two laps remaining, using heavy lapped traffic to his advantage to snatch victory like a thief in the night.

Brett Milburn had been one of the busiest and most committed drivers all night on double duty and looked set for a feature race win, only for late lap traffic to deny him in the closing stages. Milburn was forced to settle for second, with Geelong’s Jordan Rae rounding out the podium in third.

It was another fantastic Saturday night of action at Avalon Raceway, capped off with a family-friendly finishing time and a strong supporting display from the Vintage Sprintcars.

A big shoutout also goes to Daimler Trucks Geelong, who brought along the Freightliner to pace the field — a spectacular sight and a great addition to the night.

Following Saturday night’s results, the Doolans Heavy Haulage Sprintcar Track Championship — with $10,000 on the line and proudly presented by NAPA Geelong, Camden Signage & Building Services, and Transall Motors — has had a major shake-up at the top.

Jamie Veal and Jordyn Charge are now tied for the championship lead, while Daniel Pestka, Jock Goodyer, and Parker Scott all remain firmly in the hunt as the battle heats up within the top 10.
