Big Guns Arrive Next Week at Avalon Raceway

With Christmas fast approaching Geelong’s Avalon Raceway is gearing up for a busy few days with Boxing Day’s annual Sprintcar Gold Cup already attracting a great field of contestants. The added incentive of points toward the end of season Essendon Ford Sprintcar track championship also up for grabs has drawn high profile stars David Murcott, Stephen Bell and Grant Anderson. This popular trio will tackle the likes of Darren Mollenoyux, Brett Milburn, Matthew Reed, Mike Van Bremen, Domain Ramsay and Johnny Vogels in an all-out battle for supremacy.

Avalon Raceway management are excited at the prospect of the added competition as the track championship leader board begins to take shape as does the domestic Eureka Garages and Sheds Series with Boxing Days event at Avalon marking the seventh round.

“It’s a busy period of the season but also a great time of the season if you are a Sprintcar fan,” said Avalon commentator Brian Alexander.

“The Gold Cup on Boxing Day is a huge event just one day after Christmas when everyone is in a really festive spirit and that positive feeling definitely extends to our meeting on Boxing night.”

With a round of the Eureka Sprintcar Series to be completed this Saturday night at Warrnambool, defending series champ Darren Mollenoyux heads the standings by the narrowest of margins over Brett Milburn. Multiple series champ Matthew Reed has enjoyed a fast although luckless series thus far yet remains in tow in third place.

Wednesday night’s Gold Cup is just a teaser to the World Series Sprintcars tournament that’s set to appear next Sunday night, December 30th as a cast of national and international drivers are among the entries.

While a majority of Wednesday night’s Gold Cup participants will be in action, WSS also offers US imports Shane Stewart and Tim Kaeding along with defending WSS champ James McFadden and Essendon Ford Sprintcar track championship point leader Stephen Lines.

Oklahoma’s Shane Stewart enjoyed another stellar season in the US with his record fourth victory in the 360 Nationals at Knoxville being the highlight. Already off to a winning start this season with victory last weekend in Sydney, Stewart will be a leading light in the WSS championship this summer.

California’s Kaeding was voted a clear winner in the Driver of the Year in California across all divisions while taking the reins of the Krikke Motorsport #2 ensures the 34 year old will enjoy the best equipment on his tour in Australia.

World Series also boasts contracted young guns Nick Lacey, Luke Dillon, Shaun Bradford, Danny Pestka, Mark House and Trent Pigdon as Steve Caunt also makes up the contracted troupe.

“The addition of World Series just a handful of days after Boxing Day’s Gold Cup ensures this week is a rare opportunity to see some of the best drivers from not only here in Australia but also the World,” said Alexander.

Fans are also encouraged to visit the World Series Sprintcars ‘Pit Party’ from 3pm on Sunday afternoon as the addition of the giant screen is also a boost for the night’s event.
