Strong numbers in all classes were on hand for last Saturday afternoon’s much-needed practice.
Drivers and teams in Sprintcars, Street Stocks, Junior Sedans, Modified Productions, Super Sedans, Super Rods, V8 Dirt Modifieds, Wingless Sprints, Speedcars, AMCA’s and Formula 500’s were getting in vital laps before the season commences.
Darren Mollenoyux, Matthew Reed, Dennis Jones, Jake Smith, Harley Bishop and Darren Hickman hit the track first and all turned in solid lap times in warm conditions on a drying track.
Mollenoyux said the practice was integral to his busy season since returning from racing in the USA.
“It’s good just to get some early laps and see where the car’s at. It’s also handy to try some different things that we might use here at Avalon during the next few months of racing,” Mollenoyux said.
Speedcars included Matt Coombe, Troy Jordan, Jamie Laird and Travis Mills just to name a few while other classes all picked up handy lap time and vital set-up adjustments.
The first official race meeting for the 2013-14 at Avalon Raceway will be on October 19 with Street Stocks, Modified Production, Wingless Sprints, AMCA’s and GP Midgets with good numbers already entered.
One of the biggest meets for the season will be just a week later when the annual Sprintcar Jackpot will again feature some of Australia’s best drivers. Last year’s winner David Murcott will again be looking for victory.
Avalon Raceway boss Jeff Drew said he was happy with the strong turnout of class numbers and looked forward to the opening two meetings.
“It’s always good I think to let the teams try some stuff on their cars and for drivers to get valuable time behind the wheel early,” Drew said.
“We’ve got some big meetings this season again and we’re concentrating on getting our opening night ready and then looking forward to the annual Sprintcar Jackpot show.”
