Between Eureka Garages and Sheds and Essendon Ford, the fuse has been lit on a memorable Southern Showdown at Avalon Raceway this Saturday night.

The $5000 to win 30 lapper holds a vital key to the outcome of the season-long Essendon Ford $20.000 Sweepstakes that determines whether Jamie Veal or Daniel Pestka will scoop the loot.

Daniel holds a slender lead in the premiership, but mechanical problems have beset the Mat Eastham team of late after a summer of trouble free success.

That’s not Veal’s problem as interstate meetings have taken him away from the Geelong oval and he has been playing catch up since February.

Vea (pictured in car 35 thanks to Corey Gibson) is very much on the Avalon menu on Saturday night.

And if either Veal and Pestka falter don’t be surprised if Mr Reliable Brett Mlburn doesn’t upset all their plans.

SRA President Ian Vale reports a big entry list for Saturday night’s Showdown and a big roll up of F1 fans and crews are tipped to be trackside to see the sprints twist and turn on the clay.

Sprintcar racing has long held a burning torch for versatile notables Sir Jackie Stewart, Derek Warwick and Eddie Irvine.

Sir Jackie, when once commentating on American ABC’s Wide World of Sports, described sprintcars as the last frontier of auto racing entertainment.

Saturday night’s Sprintcar Showdown will start at 7.00 p.m. with gates opening at 3.00 p.m. with a pit walk for race fans to follow.
