South Australian warrior Trevor Green upset the plans of Easter Trail regulars by scoring an impressive win in the Camden Neon Signs sprintcar round last night at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway.
Green has been a frequent commuter to the big events at Avalon only to be in a winning position when cut down by other people’s accidents or mechanical woes.
“Not this time,” said a jubilant Green from atop the winner’s rostrum.
“When you get 55 cars chasing the winner’s share of the cheque you have to be hard headed, but smooth and fair and that’s what worked in our favour tonight,” said Green.
Daniel Pestka, the young South Australian who did big things in this year’s WSS series, was a deserving runner up in the Easter Classic round after starting from position five.
Jamie Veal started from position three and finished in the same spot whereas others lasted but a lap.
Dual Australian champion and World Series king James McFadden was an early casualty after being involved in one of several wrecks.
He made a fast exit in the main as did perenial favourite Max Dumesny.
Many eyes were on local hero Matt Reed who needed better than a fifth placing to wrestle the Essendon Ford $20.000 Sweepstakes out of the hands of David Murcott.
Mr Speed did his best but a 10th place finish gave the shiny new Ford to Murcott.
Reed did collect a new ART chassis for finishing second and plans to put it to good use next summer.
Weather conditions were cool but the week long promise of rain never arrived which assisted in drawin g one of the largest crowds to the Avalon Raceway in recent years.
“A good way to end the season with a strong car count, good racing, a point score finally resolved and no rain,” said Avalon’s Jeff Drew.
