South Australian Sprintcar star Steven Lines has jumped to the early lead in the Essendon Ford Sprintcar track championship at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway after his strong win during the opening round earlier this month. Lines led home reigning Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar series champ Darren Mollenoyux while perennial contender Brett Milburn rounded out the top 3.
The track championship continues on December 8th when the annual Fireball Derby is run with another strong field expected to push the numbers above the 50 car mark. The track championship is a season long battle with every feature producing important points that all carry toward the brand new Ford Fiesta that is the season end prize.
Scoresby’s Matthew Reed won the inaugural car while Stephen Bell and James McFadden have won the more recent track championships that each have produced a brand new Essendon Ford car to the track champion.
In addition to the Essendon Ford major prize, an A.R.T chassis will be the runner up prize in the track championship. Available through Michael Cunningham at PRP engineering, the A.R.T chassis is widely recognized as the car utilized by ASCS Sprintcar champion Shane Stewart in the US.
Third place in the championship won’t miss out either with Victory Lane Racegear providing a top wing for third place while Oval Express Magazine have also provided a year long subscription as fourth prize.
“This year has seen unbelievable support for the track championships across all divisions,” beamed Avalon’s Jeff Drew.
“David Dickson and his team at Essendon Ford have been fantastic with their support and it’s generated so much interest in the last few seasons that now other companies are keen to be involved also.”
The sport is enjoying continued growth with more than ten drivers making their debut already this season. With track championships such as Avalon Raceway’s plus series such as the Eureka Garages and Sheds Sprintcar series there is an abundance of racing locally in Victoria.
Avalon Raceway’s season continues this Saturday night with V8 Super Sedans heading the program while Modified Production Sedans, AMCA’s and GP Midgets will round out a huge program. Reduced admission prices make this Saturday night’s event fan friendly with more fine weather expected ensuring another great night at the speedway.
