Local track specialist and contracted World Series Sprintcars racer David Murcott sped to an impressive win on Thursday night in round 8 of the WSS championship at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway. That result now sees Murcott lead the WSS championship standings while Friday night’s Oval Express Formula 500 Series round was won by West Australian Trevor Harding Junior.

In what was a hectic two night’s of racing across two nights and a massive crowd witnessed Murcott masterfully defeat seven times and defending series champion Brooke Tatnell with Mount Gambier’s Steven Lines racing to third. Perfect weather ensured a big crowd enjoyed the night with Lines setting quick time in qualifying before Murcott made his move in Dashes as he progressed from the Bronze through the Silver and eventually to pole position.

“Murcott was simply brilliant in the dashes as he made his move. The quality of competition was very high and he did everything right in those dashes,” explained Avalon Raceway commentator Brian Alexander.

Heat wins went to Glen Saville, Darren Mollenoyux (twice), Wayne Rowett (twice), Justin Sloan, Cameron Gessner and Ricky Maiolo.

Carl Ludeman and Dennis Jones made the transfer from the C Main to the back of the B Main after officials abandoned the race following several failed attempts and a looming track curfew.

Glen Saville, Cameron Gessner, Jamie Bricknell, Robbie Farr, Carl Dowling and Daryl Hodges all made the transfer from the B Main to the back of the A Main.

Despite not figuring in the placings, Grant Anderson continues to lead the Essendon Ford Sprintcar premiership from Stephen Bell who closed the gap to 5 points.

Hot and windy conditions welcomed the Oval Express Formula 500 Series on Friday night and it was third generation West Australian Trevor Harding Junior who powered to the win. Starting on the outside of the front row Harding led home former national and series winner Matt Brown while Chad Sullivan finished third.

“The Formula 500 series has produced a number if talented Sprintcar pilots including Darren Mollenoyux, Jamie Veal and Luke Dillon to name a few and once again the young stars were on display at Avalon Raceway,” said Alexander.

“Harding was simply too good while Brown did it the hard way coming from the rear of his heats all night yet still turned that into a good result.”

“Had it not been for Harding’s younger brother and current Australian champion Daniel flipping in his second heat it could have been a Harding one two. Daniel won both his other heats yet came from the rear of the final to finish eleventh.”

Avalon Raceway now sets its sights on next Saturday night, January 8th when the K-Rock Cup rolls into town with the finest Super Sedan drivers set to appear. Doubling as a round of the National Super Sedan Series the night will also feature Super Rods and the ever popular demolition derby.
