Australian champion David Murcott sat proudly in the #1 Horrell Hurricane as he went to victory lane after winning the Enzed WSS Speedweek series main event at Avalon Raceway tonight.
Before a capacity crowd, the Point Cook local thanked everyone for their support and best wishes and reflected on his inaugural WSS win at the same track some years ago.
“It’s nice to win at Avalon because it feels like I’m home and the fans know how I feel,” stated David.
The 35 lap race was a real knock down and drag out affair.
Jamie Veal looked a likely winner, but Murcott powered to the front to head Veal, the almost forgotten James McFadden, SA ace Matt Egel and American Kyle Hirst who went into tonight’s meeting with a 39 points advantage.
Murcott won the opening round of World Series in Adelaide on Boxing night and he is the first driver to score a double in the championship this summer.
Raceway spokesman Jeff Drew said fans had witnessed ‘one of the best races this year’.
“It was a really worrying day with high winds threatening to spoil the meeting, but they moderated in the afternoon which allowed us to continue watering and prepping the clay surface,” he added.
The event also carried points towards the Essendon Ford $20.000 Sweepstakes which means Veal is on a steal with his runner up spot coupled with his win in the Gold Cup on Boxing night.
The big shows continue at Avalon Raceway this Saturday night with the annual K-Rock Cup for V8 super sedans attracting a big roll up of national drivers.
The Routleys Demolition Derby will be a highlight of the meeting with a big turn out of bangers just looking for a mash!
