ROBINSON AIMS TO LEAVE HIS MARK ON TITLE

Former triple national champion Mark Robinson is content with flying under the radar leading into the Australian V8 dirt modified championships tonight and tomorrow evening at Avalon Raceway.

The Lismore driver has been an ever present in the V8 category for several years, but as new names and flash equipment from the US generate the hype and publicity, Mark just smiles and plans his next Australian title.

V8 dirt modifieds began their rise within the national speedway community a few years ago when North coast driver Peter Britten went to the US and began winning a number of big races back to back.

The historians thought they had missed something and within a few months if you were an Australian racer, you were in vogue in America.

Peter’s brother Kevin is the Victorian champion and he will fire the first steps tonight to push national titlist, Queensland’s David Clark to the wire.

As for Robinson, pictured in his familiar machine thanks to Ben Graham, Mark has planned the road to the title well and anyone who expects him to “just make up the number” tonight is in for a shock.

Victorians Brett Clarke, Steve Milthorpe and veteran Lloyd Hobson cannot be left out of calculation.

However, the smart money will be on Robinson who is a brilliant performer in traffic and won’t take a backward step.

“This is our biggest race of the year and I am delighted it will be decided here at Avalon Raceway,” Robinson offered.

“Good competitive tracks away from our home layouts at Lismore and Brisbane are terrific because they are impartial you have to read and race them in an instant,” he added.
